"The above picture is just one small example of how our actions can impact life and our natural surroundings. By changing our habits today, we can free life on Earth."

WHAT IS “FLOE”?

We are a group of likeminded individuals who have formed a non-profit organisation [voluntary association] named Free Life On Earth [“FLOE”]. FLOE was established by its founding members on 11 December 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa.

FLOE’s main objective is to promote and facilitate educational and training programmes / initiatives relating to environmental awareness, greening, clean-up and sustainable development projects. [View FLOE’s Constitution (Founding Document) for more information regarding the structure of our organisation].

OUR NAME

The name “Free Life On Earth” signifies the Association’s two tenets:-

(i) Life is energy. By harnessing Earth’s natural renewable energy sources (instead of using other harmful unsustainable methods of power generation), we are “freeing” life on Earth.
(ii) Modern society has necessitated placing a “cost” on living. We aim to promote actions that will prove that through harnessing renewable energy, recycling, stopping wastage and conserving natural resources, it is possible to reduce your cost of living AT NO COST to the environment, thereby offering more freedom for Life on Earth.

The acronym “FLOE” also signifies the voluntary choice to live a lifestyle that honours the harmony and FLOW of nature and life. The flow of the wind, sun rays, and water are all freely available renewable and sustainable forms of energy. It is time that we utilise these gifts! The ‘FREE’ in ‘Free Life on Earth’ also stands for “For Renewable Energy & Eco-Conscious Living!”

WHAT ARE WE ABOUT?

Being a member of FLOE means that: 1. You are "For Renewable Energy and Eco-conscious living; and 2. You are committed to taking steps in your life to reduce your negative impact on the environment/eco-systems. Members of FLOE are passionate about preserving nature and leading lifestyles more in tune with our natural environment. It is a fact that many human actions have a negative impact on our natural environment and pose a threat to the continued existence of fragile eco-systems and life forms on Earth. Through educational and inspirational initiatives, it is our aim to show the people of South Africa (and the world) that it is possible to live a rewarding and DESIRABLE lifestyle without threatening life and Earth’s precious natural resources. We are of the opinion that success should not be measured by how much material “wealth” (and debt) one can accumulate throughout one’s life, but rather by how limited your negative impact on the environment is and how consciously and responsibly you live, at all times having respect for all things living. We believe that although modern living has forced us to become a disconnected society, the spirit of community, the knowledge of ‘oneness’ and the value of the precious gift of life CAN BE restored in us, through choosing to live more consciously TODAY.

WHO ARE THE FOUNDERS OF FLOE

David is a software engineer with a Computer Science Honours degree and an MBA, who has been running an information technology business since November 1994. In 2004, David started researching wind turbines and in June 2008 he started testing battery based photovoltaic and wind energy systems. He installed his first system in October 2008 and completed his second system in May 2009. These two systems have been installed in his house where he can monitor and learn from them daily. In September 2007, David and his wife, Mirjana, qualified as Reiki Masters. This opened up David's intuitive side and together with his logical mind, he has gone from strength to strength. David enjoys the Cape Town lifestyle including sailing, hiking, wine tasting and has an interest in philosophy and African Jembe Drumming. David's goal is to create a Centre of Green Learning in Cape Town, South Africa and to live "off grids".

Ninette went to school in the USA, started working in South Africa in the hospitality industry which lead her into the real estate industry. Ninette then studied small business management and worked as a conveyancing paralegal in a large law firm in Cape Town. Today Ninette runs her own small business from home offering administrative and management services to clients locally and abroad. Ninette enjoys spiritual growth, writing, nature, photography, poetry and yoga. After Ninette underwent a life-changing experience, she became passionate about “living in the moment” and leading a more conscious lifestyle. She started her “green” efforts with conserving, reusing, recycling, growing vegetables and buying a worm farm and she and her life partner Greg are aspiring to also implement renewable energy solutions at their home.
